Brooklyn-based beauty and fashion photographer Wendy Hope has been awarded first place in the beauty category of PDN’s “The Look” contest.

Wendy Hope Wins Photography Contest

Her winning image (a detail of which is shown above), “Onyx Blue Electric Spike” is from the series “The Tao of Wu,” a nail art beauty shoot with model Wu Ting Ting of Wilhelmina Models, makeup artist Margina Dennis and manicurist Honey.

Here are more images from Wendy’s Tao of Wu series, followed by some of my favorite images of hers:

33 Beauty Pros to Follow on Periscope #probeautyscopeby michela wariebi

There is no denying the power of social media.  Whereas a few years ago we could just brush things off as “just the internet,” we can now clearly see the influence and reach that can be garnered from a major social media following.  This very fact has caused quite a bit of conversation and debate within the professional beauty community.  Many hobbyists with a large following are now pegged as pros and experts and are disseminating egregiously incorrect and sometimes dangerous misinformation to the masses.  When you are an actual professional artist who has and continue to put int he work to make room for yourself in this industry, this new phenomenon can easily make you propel yourself into a new dimension due to massively strong eye rolling.

My perspective is that we can not change what is happening with social media, but we can definitely work the system to our advantage! We are the real experts, so why are we allowing hobbyists to compromise our craft?  One of the potential ways I see to remedy this is to have strong pro beauty presences on all social media platforms.  My current favorite is the new and very popular Periscope.

Periscope is alive streaming app linked to Twitter that allows you to interact real time with you viewers.  When you broadcast, your viewers can chat real time with you and you can respond real time as well.  What I love about Periscope is that it is raw; there is no editing and what you see is what you get.  Slowly but surely, the pro beauty community is growing on “The Scope,” but it can be a bit difficult to find our beauty folks because the searching capabilities are still limited.

In an effort to bypass this shortcoming I came up with the hashtag #probeautyscope.  You can’t search hashtags on Periscope, but you can search them on Twitter.  If you use #probeautyscope in the first 140 characters of your scope title, it will show up as a hashtag on Twitter making it easy for anyone looking for a #probeautyscope to find you! Simple enough, right?

In the meantime, in between time, I came up with a list of 31 beauty pros, or pro beauty resources to follow on Periscope.  Some have yet to broadcast and some broadcast regularly.  If the person, place or a thing is included on this list, they have something of value to offer to the pro beauty community. Read on and follow!

Black Makeup Artists to Follow on Instagram

Need Some Beauty Inspo? These Are the Black Makeup Artists You Should Be Following10 June, 2020by DANIELLE JACKSON

We look to celebrities for beauty inspiration a lot, but you shouldn't forget about the artists behind some of the most iconic looks we've seen in films, on television, and on red carpets. Much like your favourite beauty brands and influencers, professional makeup artists deserve recognition, too, especially Black artists who are wildly underrepresented in the beauty industry. In the same way that we like to highlight Black-owned beauty brands and founders, we should also be celebrating Black makeup artists.

With this in mind, we rounded up some of our favourite Black beauty pros who have worked with superstars like Beyoncé, Ciara, and more. Check them out ahead.

Dennis is also a beauty OG, and you can find most of her work in a ton of colorful, out-of-the-box editorials.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

I want people to keep connecting on a face to face level and not get lost in technology. I think it's really important to connect in person. I want to take a month or two and see my many friends who live in Europe.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I paint faces for a living. I've always been artistic and wanted a career change after working with LEDs for several years. Little did I know that would come full circle as I am now seeing alot of LED lighting on sets.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT TO DATE?

My Hugo Boss Fragrance Campaign shot Spring 2014 and came in the fall the same year.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO IN THE INDUSTRY?

I want to give a shout out to two people that I actually met with Adhesive events: Monet Moon and Naila Ruechel. Both ladies have become great friends but have also helped me in ways that I couldn't imagine. Naila is the reason why I have signed with Stockland Martel and I will be forever grateful.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT ADHESIVE?

I honestly don't remember. I think I saw an event on Facebook and I finally went to my first event around 2011.
